2021 was a busy year for us, delivering on our large Department of Defense contracts and further developing our core products. We are tailoring our next quarterly newsletters to highlight what we are delivering for clients in three areas: occupancy-based building automation, smart warehouses, and machine monitoring. In this issue, we are going to focus on how we are automating building systems across university campuses to reduce energy usage.
Through our relationship with the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (formerly CIT), our ongoing university deployments offer opportunities for reduced energy consumption through building analytics. We’re automating building HVAC settings to match actual occupancy, reducing thousands of room-hours of tight climate controls per building each month.
We want to make clear what we can do to utilize occupancy information to optimize HVAC operations, so we have carved out this core research component as a Space Usage Audit. This is an early consulting tool that we use to assess total possible savings through HVAC setting automations. From there, we align the room reservation software with the HVAC system to provide occupancy-based automations and allow for micro-control of climate across a building. We’re thankful to have seen such growth in a year so difficult for so many—us included—and are excited for all we have on the horizon.

Space Audit
SRT Labs performs a Space Usage Audit for campuses to support planning and to identify opportunities for improved space utilization and reduced energy consumption. Our team will reference VAV zone maps, room reservation system schedules, data from deployed motion sensors, campus energy policies, and HVAC technician guidelines and best practices to build your report. A Space Usage Audit will provide analysis on behavioral usage, presenting process change recommendations for setting automations, and a cost assessment for implementing automation in SRT’s M1 Portal. Already we’ve seen the potential for six figure savings based on optimization of maintenance resources.

Campus Deployment
Through performing Space Usage Audits, we provide universities campuses options for reducing energy consumption. In a recent pilot, SRT Labs identified that 68% of the time a building was held at HVAC comfort settings while those rooms were unoccupied. By using data from the room reservation system and occupancy sensors, we found that we could affect space planning and how HVAC is used, making sure universities are empowered to utilize only resources they need.
On university campuses, SRT Labs is integrating with Building Automation Systems, class scheduling software, and even occupancy sensors to automate the HVAC set points to reflect actual space usage. Reach out to learn more about the success of these campus deployments over the next year.

The Toggled iQ Plug Load Controller provides a power switching interface between plugs/outlets, other non-lighting loads, or entire non-lighting circuits. When matching air purification power operation with occupancy information, we’re able to automate air purification to ensure the utmost safety for those in your buildings and turn off operations when purification is complete.
